[Click Video Above] Over the last two years, working with the Oak Park Family group, creating the Plan My Future Course, and the EA Club membership it has become obvious to me… one of the most important things we can do if we have a loved one with a developmental disability, is to connect with other families like ours.
Unlike many of our friends, other families like ours just get us, and we just get them. There is no explanation needed; we feel heard and understood. This alone is a huge benefit; a sense of “okay other families are experiencing the same things that we are – I feel a bit more normal.”
In this video, I talk about my experience connecting families together, what not to do when connecting with other families, and three huge benefits I’ve seen families experience from connecting.
If you’re interested in connecting with other families, there is an opportunity to join an Oak Park Family Group online meeting for Free on September 30th. Three families will be sharing their stories of creating an individualized home with their family member, and I’ll be facilitating conversation between families.
