Tip #4: Let your loved one lead

You might be asking the question; how do we start supporting our loved one to grow their independence?

“Our #1 independence strategy is to start skill building with something that relates to something our son wants to achieve – then try to generalize.” – Karen. H. (Mother)

Often I see parents/ caregivers selecting the starting point. For example, my loved one is going to learn how to keep their room clean. When you tell them they are going to be learning to keep their room clean… there will likely be resistance.

The insight from Karen H. is to start with something your loved one wants! For example, it could be making their favourite lunch meal.

To add to this, I invite you to support your loved one in making the decision (tip #3). This can be accomplished by asking what they want to do or by giving 2 options of things you know they will be interested in and then supporting them to choose.

When your loved one decides, it gives them agency. This leads to less resistance and more engagement.

Let your loved one lead!

I’m Eric Goll. Together, let’s take a step forward.
