Tip #6: Small Steps

“For me personally, it was the ‘take small steps’ approach to achieving goals towards our daughter’s independence.” – Lauri C. (Mother)

As families, we always look for the ‘big win,’ such as learning a new task quickly, making a new friend, or getting a paid job. BUT these ‘big wins’ can be a challenge to achieve.

AND to feel like we are making progress, we must string several ‘big wins’ together. There is a lot of hard work that goes into it, and it takes time – which is why feeling like you are making progress is rare. You are left feeling disappointed when chasing the ‘big wins’.

Instead, of looking for the ‘big win,’ you can still set that big goal, but you then need to break that big goal into small steps.

I guide families to build a 3-month plan for each of their goals. This means creating much smaller and manageable action steps.

If you’re struggling with an action step, that means it is too big! Break that step down into 2 or 3 smaller steps.

Small steps are the key to progress!
