Strengthening Your Loved One’s Safety Net & Building Their Support Circle

March 1, 2024

I know that YOU are your loved one’s safety net.

You are there for them. You’ve got their back. BUT who will be there when you can’t be?

This might be the fear that keeps you up at night.

Many families struggle to answer this question – so in this video, we are going to work together to find the answer.

Imagine this: you’ve thought that paid support workers would be there for your loved one.

But here’s the tough reality: most (like ~99%) paid support workers come and go, and they aren’t there over the long term for your loved one.

In my sister’s life, she’s had countless paid supporters, but only a handful have stuck around. Why?

Because they were more like acquaintances than genuine friends, which is a sad reality for our loved ones with disability.

So, who can you turn to?

The answer lies with neurotypical individuals in heartfelt relationships with your loved one. They remain by their side because they genuinely care and cherish your loved ones for who they are.

But the next question would be, how do you find these people?

Here are some tips:

  1. Start small and keep it simple. Find one person who enjoys being around your loved one. They could be a family member, neighbor, or someone from your community who likes spending time together.
  2. Invest time and effort into nurturing these relationships. Over time, your loved one will have a strong support system, even when you can’t be there.
